Germany to go nuke free by 2022

Uncategorized Comments Off
Anti-nuclear power protesters from Germany, Austria and France march in Switzerland on May 22.

(CNN) — Germany’s ruling coalition has agreed to shut down all of the nation’s nuclear power plants by 2022.Minister of Ecology Norbert Roettgen of the Christian Democratic Union party made the announcement early Monday after negotiations with coalition partner, the Liberal Party, which had been opposed to setting a date for decommissioning the nuclear facilities. Opposition parties have long supported shuttering nuclear energy in Germany”The decision looks like this,” Roettgen said. “Seven older nuclear power plants … and the nuclear plant Kruemmel will not go back online … a second group of six nuclear reactors will go offline at the end of 2021 at the latest, and … the three most modern, newest nuclear plants will go offline in 2022 at the latest.”

To make up for the loss of nuclear energy, the German government will begin to switch to renewable energy and increase investments in energy research, the government website says.

Caution: It is vitally important not to make connections

Uncategorized Comments Off

Caution: It is vitally important not to make connections. When you see pictures of rubble like this week’s shots from Joplin, Missouri, you should not ask yourself: I wonder if this is somehow related to the huge tornado outbreak three weeks ago in Tuscaloosa, or the enormous outbreak a couple of weeks before that—together they comprised the most active April for tornadoes in our history. But that doesn’t mean a thing.

It is far better to think of these as isolated, unpredictable, discrete events. It is not advised to try and connect them in your mind with, say, the fires now burning across Texas—fires that have burned more of America by this date than any year in our history. Texas, and adjoining parts of Oklahoma and New Mexico, are drier than they’ve ever been—the drought is worse than the Dust Bowl. But do not wonder if it’s somehow connected.

If you did wonder, you’d have to also wonder about whether this year’s record snowfalls and rainfalls across the Midwest—resulting in record flooding across the Mississippi—could somehow be related. And if you did that, then you might find your thoughts wandering to, oh, global warming. To the fact that climatologists have been predicting for years that as we flood the atmosphere with carbon we will also start both drying and flooding the planet, since warm air holds more water vapor than cold.

It’s far smarter to repeat to yourself, over and over, the comforting mantra that no single weather event can ever be directly tied to climate change.

Oil vs. Clean Energy Subsidies

Uncategorized Comments Off

With the rumblings on Capitol Hill about elimination of tax incentives to the oil industry, conservatives and oil industry defenders have complained that fossil fuel organizations are being unfairly singled out and that if those advocating for the elimination of oil and gas subsidies were consistent, they would also advocate for the elimination of subsidies and tax incentives for renewable energy producers.

Though this argument, on its face makes sense, and even had me – the economic conservative – convinced, upon further study the two types of subsidies cannot be correlated. The basis for this statement is found within the economic doctrine of negative externalities. Negative externalities, for those readers who are not familiar with the term, are societal costs of production of a resource or product – such as pollution – that are not taken into account in the market value of a certain product. With the pollution example, it could be said that the market – by keeping gasoline prices low based upon supply and demand (or other forces) – does not accurately measure the overall social costs in heathcare, environmental cleanup, and worker productivity etc.  that the pollution from gasoline has. In fact, it could be said that the market does not measure these overall social costs – these externalities – at all

New Study Finds Solar Panels Are “Contagious”

Uncategorized Comments Off

solar, pv, solar contagious, solar adoption, photovoltaics, behavior,
Are you more likely to install solar panels if your neighbor has them? A new study (PDF) out of Stanford says that you are. More specifically, it finds that for every 1 percent increase in the number of installations in a particular zip code, the time until the next adoption of solar decreases by 1 percent. Or, as Vote Solar’s Adam Browning put it: Solar is contagious!

So just how quickly can solar power spread as this snowball effect gets rolling? John Farrell of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance’s New Rules Project projects the trends forward:

If you start with a neighborhood with 25 solar installations, where it was 100 days between the 24th and 25th installation, this peer pressure effect will reduce the time between installations to just 10 days by the 250th [photovoltaic] project.

Here’s what the effect looks like:

solar, pv, solar contagious, solar adoption, photovoltaics, behavior,

Of course, this process can take a pretty long time to actually unfold. In the example above, in a hypothetical zip code starting with one solar installation, it takes 15 years for the gap between installations to come down to 10 days.

On March 29th Citizenre returned to Redding California for a ceremony commemorating the cooperation between Citizenre and the Redding renewable energy department in the installation of the 72 RenU systems.  Attending were city leaders as well as members of the council and Redding REU. It was great to see the city officials get the value of the program as well as helping them achieve their renewable energy goals. While working together we forged a great relationship with the city and they said they look forward to working with us in the future. Here is the video from the local news channel. A “Pat on the back” to to everybody involved.

the U.S. Solar Energy Industry in 2010

Uncategorized Comments Off

Growth and Opportunity Shines on the U.S. Solar Energy Industry in 2010
In case you haven’t already heard, the American solar energy industry broke another record in 2010, installing enough new solar electric capacity to power almost 200,000 homes.  This more than doubles our record year in 2009. In addition, more than 65,000solar water and pool heating systems were installed across the country in 2010. All told, the industry grew by 67 percent from $3.6 billion in 2009 to $6 billion in 2010.

The free executive summary of the 2010 Solar Market Insight: Year in Review from SEIA® and GTM Research details the growth of the U.S. solar industry, whether you’re interestedin photovoltaic (PV) systems on rooftops, CSP plants in the desert, or solar water heating on businesses. We now release a quarterly version of this report, so be sure to check back for the latest solar market information.

You may be surprised to learn that the solar industry is growing fastest in states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Sixteen states installed more than 10 megawatts of PV in 2010, up from only four in 2007. California is still a big market, but Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Florida, Texas and others are catching up.

Thank you for advocating for solar in 2010. Your phone calls, emails and letters worked to make our voices heard on Capitol Hill like never before. We could not have accomplished all we did without you. Keep checking your email – with your help, we can make 2011 another blue ribbon year for solar energy!
